Universal Basic Income Becoming Reality?

Universal Basic Income Becoming Reality?

ONE OF THE BIG PICTURE
PROGRESSIVE IDEAS THAT HAS BEEN OFTEN THEORIZED AND DISCUSSED
BUT RARELY PUT INTO PRACTICE IS THE IDEA OF A BASIC INCOME, BUT
ANOTHER EXPERIMENT IN BASIC INCOME IS ABOUT TO BE STARTED
RIGHT NOW IN FINLAND WHERE THEY WILL BE TESTING IT OUT WITH
ABOUT 2000 OF THEIR CITIZENS. THE BASIC INCOME IDEA CAN COME
IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS, BUT THE BASIC IDEA IS THAT PEOPLE WILL
RECEIVE GOVERNMENT MONEY, LIKE A FORM OF A WELFARE PAYMENT OR
SOMETHING LIKE THAT, REGARDLESS OF EMPLOYMENT STATUS, A SORT OF
MINIMUM INCOME THEY WILL RECEIVE. IN SOME EXPERIMENTS IT
IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY, IN THIS CASE IT WILL BE FOR PEOPLE WHO
ARE UNEMPLOYED, AND THERE ARE VARIOUS WAYS TO ORGANIZE IT. BUT
THE IDEA IS THAT YOU CAN TO SOME EXTENT MINIMIZE INCOME
INEQUALITY, STIMULATE THE ECONOMY, AND HELP PEOPLE OUT WHO
ARE HURTING THE MOST BY PROVIDING A MINIMUM INCOME BELOW
WHICH THEY WILL NOT FALL. AND TO SOME EXTENT WE DO THIS ALREADY,
YOU CAN RECEIVE HOUSING AND FOOD ASSISTANCE, ASSISTANCE ON YOUR
HEALTHCARE, WE SIMPLY MAKE IT TARGETED TO SPECIFIC THINGS IN
AMERICA AND MANY OTHER COUNTRIES RATHER THAN A BASIC INCOME THAT
IS REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS GOING TO BE SPENT ON. THAT IS
THE FORM THEY WILL BE TAKING — BY THE WAY IN THIS CASE THAT
INCLUDES UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS THAT THEY ARE RECEIVING. ONE OF
THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE CREATION OF THIS — THE BASIC IDEA IS THAT RIGHT
NOW IF YOU ARE RECEIVING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS AND YOU
SEE A JOB THAT IS SHORT-TERM OR DOESN’T PAY VERY WELL YOU MIGHT
NOT WANT TO TAKE THAT JOB BECAUSE YOU WILL LOSE OUT ON
THOSE BENEFITS AND MAYBE NOT BE ABLE TO GET THEM BACK WHEN THE
SHORT TERM OR LOW-PAYING JOB ENDS, WHEREAS IN THIS CASE IF
YOU ARE ALREADY RECEIVING THE MONEY YOU CAN TAKE THE JOB AND
YOU WILL BE OKAY. IT’S AN INTERESTING
EXPERIMENT, I’M CURIOUS TO SEE HOW IT GOES. AS YOU MENTIONED
EARLIER IT DOESN’T NECESSARILY WORK FOR ALL COUNTRIES, AND ONE
OF MY CONCERNS WAS THE ISSUE OF INFLATION. IF YOU HAND PEOPLE
MONEY AND THERE ARE MORE INDIVIDUALS SPENDING, WILL THAT
INCREASE INFLATION OR HAVE SOME NEGATIVE RAMIFICATIONS THAT MAYBE
PEOPLE WITH GOOD INTENTIONS DIDN’T THINK OF AHEAD OF TIME? I
DON’T KNOW, I DON’T KNOW HOW THIS WILL GO, I LIKE THE IDEA OF
POLITICIANS IN THE COUNTRY LOOKING OUT FOR THE PEOPLE AND
ENSURING THAT EVERYONE HAS A DECENT QUALITY OF LIFE, I KNOW
SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES HAVE A LOT OF PROGRESSIVE POLICIES THAT
MAKE RIGHT-WING HEADS EXPLODE HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, BUT
STUDY AFTER STUDY SHOWS THAT THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE IS MUCH
BETTER THAN OURS, THEIR OVERALL HAPPINESS IS BETTER THAN OURS. SO I LIKE THESE TYPES OF EXPERIMENTS, AND I’M CURIOUS TO
SEE HOW IT PLAYS OUT. THERE HAVE BEEN OTHERS
THROUGHOUT THE LAST FEW DECADES IN NAMIBIA AND BRAZIL, NORTH
CAROLINA EVEN, THE NETHERLANDS. IT IS NOT NECESSARILY THE SAME
THING, BUT ALASKA’S PERMANENT FUND, WHICH TAKES OIL REVENUE
AND GIVES IT OUT TO EVERY CITIZEN OF ALASKA, SOMETHING
LIKE $1000, IS SOMETHING LIKE THE BASIC INCOME. ONE CONCERN IS
THAT IT COULD LEAD TO PEOPLE WORKING FEWER HOURS, SOME
EXPERIMENTS HAVE SHOWN THAT IT DOES LEAD TO A REDUCTION IN
HOURS WORKED BY 5 TO 7%, I THINK IF IT MEANS LOWER INCOME
INEQUALITY AND PEOPLE AREN’T STARVING THAT IS NOT NECESSARILY
A TERRIBLE THING. WHAT WE NEED IS EXPERIMENTS, WE NEED TO RUN
IT AND SEE WHAT THE EFFECT IS, THAT’S WHY IT IS GOOD THAT
FINLAND IS DOING IT, BUT I DO THINK THAT IT IS REALLY WEIRD
HOW WE THINK VERY DIFFERENTLY ABOUT MONEY BEING GIVEN BY THE
GOVERNMENT TO A GROUP OF PEOPLE IF THEY ARE POOR PEOPLE OR IF
THEY ARE RICH PEOPLE. IF IT’S 500 EUROS BEING GIVEN TO SOMEONE
WHO IS DEAD BROKE, IT’S LIKE MAYBE, I DON’T KNOW WHAT EFFECT
IT WILL HAVE, MAYBE IT WILL MAKE THEM LAZY, BUT IF IT IS MASSIVE
TAX CUTS FOR THE RICHEST PEOPLE WHERE WE SHOWER THEM IN MILLIONS
OF DOLLARS, JUST DO IT, SEE WHAT HAPPENS, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? NO ONE IS CONCERNED THAT THE RICH MIGHT WORK FEWER HOURS IF WE
GIVE THEM A TON OF MONEY IN THE FORM OF TAX CUTS, WE ASSUME THAT
THEY WILL KEEP WORKING. BUT WHEN IT IS THE POOR, THESE LAZY
MOTHERFUCKERS, MAYBE THEY WILL WORK AN HOUR LESS A WEEK. THAT
IS A WEIRD STEREOTYPE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE, EVEN PROGRESSIVES
LIKE ME, MIGHT HAVE IF YOU ARE NOT CONSCIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT IT.
AND ALSO ONE OF THE IDEAS WE MIGHT WANT TO HAVE IS A LOT
OF PEOPLE, EVEN IF THEY CAN FIND A JOB, ARE LOCKED INTO
UNSATISFYING WORK WHERE THEY ARE NOT NECESSARILY PRODUCING TO
THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL. IF PEOPLE HAVE A MINIMUM INCOME THEY CAN
FALL BACK ON, WHICH BY THE WAY IS NOT GOING TO BE LUXURIOUS, IT
WILL BE A SHITTY WAY TO LIVE, MAYBE THEY CAN AFFORD TO HOLD
OUT FOR A WHILE TO GET AN EDUCATION OR DO SOMETHING
ARTISTIC OR START A BUSINESS RATHER THAN GRINDING IT OUT IN A
MINIMUM WAGE JOB SO THEY CAN HAVE FOOD. I THINK CULTURE HAS A LOT TO
DO WITH THAT, AND AMERICAN CULTURE, I DON’T KNOW IF IT IS
UNIQUE, BUT THERE IS A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON WORKING AND MAKING
MONEY REGARDLESS OF YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER
YOU FEEL FULFILLED. IT’S ALL ABOUT WORK, WORK, MAKE AS MUCH
MONEY AS POSSIBLE, IF YOU DON’T THEN YOU MUST BE LAZY, IF YOU
ARE UNHAPPY YOU ARE UNGRATEFUL, FIRST WORLD PROBLEM — BUT
OVERALL IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO CREATE A SYSTEM THAT NOT ONLY
LEADS TO A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR EVERYONE, LEADS TO
PEOPLE PURSUING EDUCATION AND PURSUING BETTER OPPORTUNITIES
FOR THEMSELVES, BUT A TYPE OF CULTURE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO ENJOY
ELEMENTS OF LIFE THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH WORK. AND I
THINK WE’VE MOVED SO FAR AWAY FROM THAT THAT WE HAVE LOST
SIGHT OF WHAT LIVING IS REALLY ABOUT. IT’S NOT ABOUT WORKING
AND TORTURING YOURSELF JUST SO YOU CAN MAKE ENOUGH TO PUT FOOD
ON THE TABLE. AND I’M JUST GLAD TO SEE BIG
PROGRESSIVE IDEAS THAT MIGHT SUCCEED OR FAIL AT LEAST BEING
TRIED SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD. BEING A PROGRESSIVE IS NOT JUST
SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT PARTISAN BULLSHIT OR THE DAY-TO-DAY FIGHT
IN GOVERNMENT, WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TRYING TO COME UP WITH
SOMETHING BIG THAT CAN CHANGE THE WAY WE LIVE AND IMPROVE,
TO PROGRESS, ACTUALLY. MAYBE IT HAS TO BE SCANDINAVIA
BUT I’M GLAD IT’S HAPPENING. I HOPE THAT AT SOME POINT
SOME COUNTRY SOMEWHERE TRIES SOMETHING LIKE UNIVERSAL
HEALTHCARE, SO WE CAN SEE WHETHER OR NOT IT WORKS, AND
THEN MAYBE WE CAN ADOPT IT HERE IN THE UNITED STATES. PIE IN THE SKY. GO GET THAT PIE. JUST TRY IT SOMEWHERE. IF IT HAPPENS, WE WILL REPORT
ON IT. SOUNDD CRAZY TO ME.

Some transit systems have tried totally free fares before & it didn't work out as well as charging some small nominal amount. Perhaps a UBI could be tied to having some volunteer/community service/education thing – assuming people can do it – that is.

Leftists would love to do this by stealing money from producers and giving it to moochers. Oh, they just put a fig leaf over it by calling it "taxation". Oh, but they always use verbal slight of hand to justify the theft.

Another benefit is that it makes the country more competitive. When everyone has a basic income, businesses may lower cost by reducing salary.

Finland floats on a pond of oil which is controlled by the state. Finland is completely reliant on oil production and export as their only industry of consequence. If you really look at American history, it's POPULISM that is the American way. FDR won an unprecedented four terms. "Necessitous men are not free men." He was a hero to the American public. 27. SomeGuy OnTheInternet says:

To support UBI you need to be incredibly short sighted. It guarantees horrific rates of inflation. Who is going to take a job cooking/serving food or cleaning toiilets if you don't need to do it pay rent and put food on the table? The only way a business owner will convince someone to do those jobs is if they throw a LOT of money at them. The only way to afford that is to increase the price of goods and charge anyone who wants to use the toilet. So with UBI you can look forward to paying $300 for your next Big Mac meal and an extra $50 if you want to use the toilet while you are there. As a side note, guess who does really well when inflation goes crazy? Yup, the people who already have lots of assets.

  28. Walter Marlin says:

Tax automation. Any company that is using a machine that is automated (does not require a human to operate it) tax the employer on what a human would make doing that job. What would the payroll tax have been if a human did the job? The employer must pay this payroll tax which will go into the basic income fund. The more automation there is the higher the basic income check becomes.

  31. Craig Stafford says:

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of Happiness". Americans are not happy at the current system. Progressive ideas need to be incorporated to reflect the reality of today. The economy is not growing simply because most middle income Americans do not have the extra income to add to the economy. That's what happens when so much wealth is positioned at the top, it fails to trickle down as it was intended to do. When that happens you get the financial crisis we have in 2008, and slow growth. Now with automation included, those hard working Americans that work 2 or 3 jobs just to put food on the table and pay off $1.4 trillion of student loan debt are suffering, stressing and are not reaping the benefits of life and happiness. It's time that we get our heads out of our asses and move forward to help ALL people with more emphasis placed on the middle and lower classes (the backbone of our economy)!

These two bitches on TYT do an entire segment on Universal Basic Income…and not once, do they mention the reason behind what's driving this – (MANY predictions are being made indicating that, within 10 to 20-years, up to 50% of Americans & up to 2/3rd's of the people in developing countries could be eliminated from the work-force – (due to AI, Robotics… Automation, Quantum-computing, etc.) I happened to come across this video, as I was surfing around & the looking into this topic, but watching these two idiots is like watching two kids setting up a make-believe studio in their basement & them pretending to have a show! 35. Green Acorn says:

Tax cuts aren't giving people money, they're taking less of it. People on the far-left really do seem to imagine that wealth is just centrally distributed.

  36. Denis Royle says:

We have universal health care in the U.K.and it works quite well. It does not cover everything, some drugs cost $300,000 a year or more and they wont pay for them; neither do they pay for teeth or glasses unless you are a child, a pensioner or on welfare.

  37. mossfloss says:

I'd rather see universal employment and a guaranteed JOB for everyone who can work.

  38. Edward Chyrek says:

Universal Healthcare – it's already done in Australia, works great! 🙂

  39. Sean O'Leary says:

I think this is a misguided move. A job guarantee program is a much better idea. Our economy gets its value because it's based on goods and services we produce/provide. If we don't back up our currency with something real, it begins to lose its value. We can still decide what a real job looks like based on a community level/needs basis.

  40. Sheila Lawrence says:

  50. Anthony Petrucci says:

I'm a right-leaning libertarian Trump supporter, and I support this idea. It's a way better idea than something like minimum wage hikes, single-payer healthcare, etc. It preserves the free market, preserves currency and prices as indicators for supply and demand, lets people budget and make their own choices instead of government central planning, removes the welfare cliff, and preserves incentives for people to work and make extra discretionary income if they're able. The fact is, the free market pays people based on the value they bring, and sometimes that's way more or way less than what they need to survive.

Libertarians and Conservatives have a hard time with this sort of thing, because they're afraid of big government. But the point to stress is that it's not central planning, and it can actually shrink the size of government. We don't need a million different social programs with different forms to fill out and bureaucrats doing means testing. We also don't need to expand government as a means to "create jobs", which is really just a roundabout way of giving people some BS task to do so they can justify receiving money and being able to eat. The govt simply needs to collect wealth, redistribute, and maybe make a few small adjustments based on individual needs. Then it can get out of the way and let the free market operate.

  51. Sheila Lawrence says:

In the future we need a Basic Income and for that to work we need to make sure that the essentials in life like rent, electricity, food, clothing , fuel to never go up.

  58. newgtguy says:

To do this, taxes would need to be massively increased. 50% of my income already goes to the government. Should I be paying more? Remember, taxes are collected at the barrel of a gun. Taxes are a euphemism for armed robbery.

  59. newgtguy says:

Universal healthcare is a massive failure as nobody has any access. Go to a public clinic in Canada and watch as they send you to a private clinic (you need to pay for) after a 6 hour wait to see a Dr. for a common cold.

  60. Beth Mason says:

this is an idea that we are going to have entertain seriously more and more as the potential for mass unemployment becomes more of a reality. As more and more jobs are being automated and computerized, we are going to have fewer and fewer jobs that need to be filled by human beings and those people will need to be cared for somehow. we can't keep holding back advancement to save a handful of unnecessary and obsolete jobs.

  68. Dan Law says:

There is so much information lacking in this video. UBI has been tried several times and is usually if not always successful. What we need is a cap on wealth and a UBI. Those combined will massively increase the quality of life we live; this should also be done world wide. So much positive will result in ways yet foreseen. Additionally a UBI is becoming more and more necessary as we reduce the need for people to work with things like automation.

The current system in the U.S. (capitalism) allows for a few to become obscenely rich at the expense of many others. What I have suggested will help bring that to an end.

The problem with thinking like this is ur trying to change the way the world works, Society and individuals and make it work how u think it should. It doesn't work. Government needs to get out of the little guys way and make it easier so they can build not set laws to decide how much u can build. Where are these poor ppl who dont have food in usa its very rare. N if u get food stamps n sell it for drugs whose fault is that. Cuz ive seen it happen more then once. Almost Everything is from a major corporation theres very few small business which are usually franchise's. There goes all the regular ppl who used to own the shops that sold stuff u buy in Wal-Mart. There goes competition and our wealth.
