Michio Kaku: The Secret Weapon of American Science

Michio Kaku: The Secret Weapon of American Science

Unfortunately, I’m rather pessimistic about
the way we teach science. And some people ask me a simple question. They are visitors from overseas. And they say that, “Wow, America has so many
Nobel laureates, but it has one of the worst education programs known to science.” This is measurable. Our kids scored dead last of all the other
developed nations. And our students ranked actually a little
bit below the students of Jordan in science and math tests. So my friends from overseas ask a simple question. Why doesn’t America collapse? I mean, where do all these Nobel laureates
come from, and these innovations come from that we see coming from Silicone Valley? Well, America has several secret weapons that
most nations have never heard of. First of all, our secret weapon, the weapon
that keeps us at the forefront of innovation and scientific progress and high tech, is
the H1B. That is our secret weapon that most nations
and people have never heard of. The H1B is the genius visa. You are “a genius,” a PhD, you have wealth,
you’re an established figure, zoom you go right into the United States to energize Silicon
Valley, which is 50% foreign born. Yes, you see Bill Gates. Yes, you see Steve Jobs out there, but 50%
of the **** scientists behind Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are foreign-born. There’s a brain drain. A tremendous brain drain into the United States. The top talent comes here. This is where innovation takes place and is
rewarded financially. But there are other reasons why America does
catch up. First of all, America does “see the genius
in the classroom.” The young Bill Gates, the young Steve Jobs,
the young Albert Einstein. These people **** because in the East there
is an expression, “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.” In the East there is this Confucian tradition
that you’re not supposed to make your peers look bad by excelling and trying to achieve
something beyond their abilities. However, in the West, we have another saying,
and that is, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.” So, the innovators, the real imaginative thinkers,
they are rewarded in the American system, while in the East they are hammered down. And third, our college system is not so bad. Even though our high school system graduates
generations of near-illiterate students, by the time they hit college, then that’s when
they begin to accelerate. That’s when they begin to get up to speed. But you know, we cannot sustain our scientific
establishment this way. We cannot continue to depend on foreign scientists. We cannot continue to depend on the genius
that may or may not arise, and we certainly cannot depend on college being a remedial
high school.

This is rather Ridiculous… Intelligence does not bring wealth. You could be the smartest man in the world working at McDonalds if you don't figure out a way to apply yourself correctly. Unfortunately Patenting ideas is the worst idea. A patent lasts four years if production starts immediately then it is open to anyone who is willing to make a factory to build your invention to simply steal it without paying any dues. I once met a man that "Invented" the way to put images on computers through cameras. He doesn't have a dime and no one will sue Bill Gates or Apple for using his patent without his permission. So he let his patent expire because he could not afford to keep it. Where is the man that reinvented the lightbulb? The Light Emitting Diode? He should have made a Billion but he sold out for around 2 million at best. Best idea if you plan on really inventing things and making money on your invention? Keep it a secret and in your brain until you have enough money to produce it yourself and be sure to hotwire it with some Plastic Explosive to destroy the invention if someone decides to tamper with it or disassemble it to copy it. Good Luck Inventors.

I believe the American education system is not to be blamed. The industry instead of allowing the wages to go high, have chosen to suppress wages by flooding the job market with cheap foreign labor. If there is shortage, let the markets adjust themselves by letting the wages for STEM professionals go high, giving the students incentive to pursue a degree in that field. The question is whether these Americans  are patriotic about their countrymen or is it more important for them to accumulate wealth?

I'm embaressed to be American sometimes. It's the people, not the government and systems. We're full of half educated retards. Most anyone here would disagree, but there's a reason why the government treats us the way they do. Most of our population is not capable of making an intelligent decision. We're an ""everyone gets a trophy" society. Why try? We'll be rewarded for screwing up. We celebrate ignorance (celebrities like Kim K.) Lets our kids really know how uncool knowing things are. We do have plenty to laugh at when people are drunk though, or sober for that matter. So, we go that goin for us.

Its the culture. We don't even teach children to type on a cellphone, and some type faster on a cellphone than the best secretary dreamed off typing on a typewriter… Our culture in USA is about Super soldiers, gang bangers, rich people and their spoils, get to date the richest guy or the hottest girl and presume it to other people. That's our culture, and any intelligent child quickly learns what it takes to succeed in their society so to get social acceptance, as our instincts demand us we should do.  Europe and other countries have better habits, less stupefying entertainment, more heroes that are not fighters but thinkers and not rich but wise.

  44. Benny Harmon says:

  47. Ente Fetz says:

2:00 the young Albert Einstein did not live in the US. He went to the US after he had become famous.
This means he is part of the first point Kaku said about the braindrain the US inflicts on Europe.

  48. Kenneth Blair says:

Wow, I have a lot to say. I have no PhD, nor do I have a Bachelors; Dec 2017, I will complete my first Bachelors. It was not til the age of 39 , that I was able to attend a University. Yes, I had remedial classes but I was excited to take them. As I took those remedial classes I saw the same thing over and over; C or D students, fresh out of High School getting answers that had held them from being A and B students. Now, I never graduated from a public High School. I was the student stuck in the fail but pass system. It was normal in the late 80s and early 90s. I think we fail because we see a problem when a student makes below a B. I thing a 20% loss in knowledge is a cause for concern. We should not look at a C and not see an alarm go off. The very first C mean that student is going to have a road block to understanding what comes after, and very good chance of failing even more.Let me say I think Mr. Kaku is incorrect in stating colleges or Universities should not be remedial. I think Colleges and Universities offer that chance for a student to learn and to rise, when the public or private education system failed. The next problem is the cost. You can go to a Community College and hopefully afford it, but going to a Major University, that does not offer a 'plain jane' degree is an astronomical financial undertaking. The are Scholarships and Grants, also FASA and Cardinal Loans, but most are for those who achieved very well in High School, Non- Caucasian, or Foreign, or under the age of 25. That scared most off, and thus, we lose more potential. I think we should do more, as in remedial classes and encourage those who were not in top percentile, they can be educated and their potential can be expanded. What I am saying, Colleges and Universities should boast on remedial classes, and encourage more to attend. We as a nation can bring greatness out of our public school system, even if it means a few remedial classes to bring them up to par. We can not afford to tell them they have no potential because of SAT, or ACT, and other various score used to keep student from attending. We should say instead, 'You are this close and we are going to get you there!' You have potential like anyone else! Yes, improvement is need in the public school system; I am a by product of that system; but we can succeed with remedial classes. Thank you for letting me post. I wanted to say a lot more but will finish with one sentence. I have a 9th grade education, recently got my GED, I took remedial classes, December 2017 I will graduate with a Bachelors; I preach to the younger student, I tell them how much potential they have and I am envious. I have a large following of younger students. They tell me how how I inspire them to stay and to make good grades, also that they feel so proud that they finally can receive and understand the questions they asked and never got answered. Mr. Kaku, there is your answer, remedial can fix and still keep the American potential there. If we can fix the public school system, then we grab those student as fast as possible, and give (teach) them what they missed and much more.

I always wonder why other countries like India or China are so keen for the US to keep taking in their college grads via H1-B. Don't the Indians or Chinese or Germans see how much talent they're losing this way? They should want to keep their best and brightest at home and nurture them there.

If you have the best grades in your year, people would know. I don't know about other Asian countries but in Hong King, the competition between children are extremely fierce. Parents push their kids to many different extra curriculum and they have tutors to help them with school work.

America simply has better standard of living and better opportunities compare to many Asian countries.

The countries whose candidates stay here afterwards get robbed of their bright people, that those countries need to build their country. The ones that go back to their homelands, bring back western culture and contaminate their country's culture. Not mention disenfranchise some American students trying to apply into the programs. We should try to make our own system better and more efficient for americans and give aid to other countries to help their own secondary education system, without infecting their society with our cultural values.

  65. FalconVI says:

You can't make Spain as inventive and innovative as Germany or just even Netherlands or Austria in all eternity. 68. Alakh Niranjan says:

At last – naked truth from an authority so high as Mr Michio Kaku.

Thanks Sir for the eyeopener! Those who marketed H1B negatively by some political gain, needs to consider that Universities are a big income for the US education system. Nobody will come to the US on study visa, if H1b is stopped. Because nobody will be able to recover their huge fees/cost they invested for masters/bachelors/PhDs. For example, I paid $60,000 including tuition and living just for my masters in the US, which is equal to almost INR 4,000,000!! If a foreign student doesn't get an H1b (or job), he will lose all the investment, which may be his family's big part of savings so far in few decades. With the collapse of the Universities, naturally funding will be impacted and the whole STEM & financial ecosystem!

Another good point which almost NOBODY is aware (or at least made aware) in our country – is that H1B is just another job applicant in the US. Our problem is immigration rules allows low waging to H1bs, discriminating with US Citizens, traps H1Bs in never ending Green Card chases spanning over decades, making rules in a way that corporate can exploit H1bs to work 12 hours a day without extra compensation (indirectly replacing US Citizens, because H1Bs are now preferred tech 'donkeys' who can work more and complaint less) and with rule making that H1b holder cannot be even promoted beyond a line and can't change jobs/companies easily for years, otherwise he may lose his place in the long queue of green card.

The problem is corporate funding is not allowing employment rule making to be fair and equal enough, in rights to the US Citizens and H1bs, for the jobs at least. This trend negatively impacts our economy by flooding of H1bs, systematic sweeping of US Citizens with H1bs in tech sector etc. etc.

If we can provide equal rights of employment, and compensation to the US Citizens and H1Bs, this issue will be resolved automatically. "No exploitation to any group" = "fair job market", irrespective of anybody's immigration status. In fact, H1Bs have created far more number of jobs statistically than they have consumed – that is how it should be! I wish we all can make a difference by this simple awareness and real truth behind H1Bs.

The theory goes that Christianity encourages us to make as much money as possible, so we can give it back to the church. So it (the church) motivates Americans to excel and succeed. Europe cannot be used in this example because they have very high taxes that prevents people from investing extra money in generating more wealth and Latin American leaders are way to corrupt.

I don't know if someone else pointed this out but the speaker if factually incorrect. The O-1 visa is the genius visa. According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services: The O-1 nonimmigrant visa is for the individual who possesses extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics, or who has a demonstrated record of extraordinary achievement in the motion picture or television industry and has been recognized nationally or internationally for those achievements.

The H1-B visa exists to provide skilled labor in the US. It has been suggested, and in many cases demonstrated, that the visa exists primarily to control the costs of employing skilled labor in the US. Not as the speaker suggests, to provide skills unavailable or in short supply in the US. This is most often demonstrated by the fact that a significant percentage (33% in 2013 alone) of H1-B visas go to companies specializing in outsourcing.

  81. jakolu says:

Many countries have less restrictive immigration policies, and getting a work visa as a skilled worker is easier than getting H1B status. The US attracts such skilled aliens for various reasons, such as economic opportunity and prestigious companies and institutions.

  89. Hell's Kitchen says:

Yes – so lets ignore our kids and fill our universities with the students of hostile nations. Michio Kaku seems to be totally ignorant as to how H1b is used…… ill give you a hint: your glorious hero Bill Gates and his damned Microsoft (among others) have used it to undercut American engineers – educating Asians from India at company owned campuses in Asia and then "helping" them through US immigration via programs like the H1b program so they can pay them 40% of what an American engineer would require -some actually "bringing their foreign born replacements up to speed" before being put out to pasture. Silicone Valley cant find Americans to fill these jobs (out of a pool of 110 million people – the US workforce…think about that number for a second) because they have the tools to ignore the more expensive indigenous worker. One question – what happens to the funding (tax revenue) and the markets when the wages of the US fall to match the "global market"? I dont buy it for a second that US kids arent entering the tech/science fields, for one their options have been drastically paired thanks to this utterly stupid globalist push.

  90. Azhan Nayeem says:

Hehe American people think they have worst education system! Come to India then only you'll witness the most backward education system in human history

  91. Charles Szakal says:

    Snitch

  92. Franklin Falco says:

We hear a lot about math and science but the humanities are equally important.

  93. Tidder T says:

    sad he mentioned Steve BlowJobs
That guy is no scientist, has no invention, etc

  94. Robert Oppenheimer says:

    He forgot Jews in Israel

  95. mahmoody says:

this is so true, 1 egyptian scientist who was rewarded a noble was not able to continue his research in egypt and america offered him a team and funding for his project and it helped him.

  96. Hla Myo Kyaw says:

Your observations are absolutely true, professor! Please keep up the good work.

  97. Cowboy Bebop says:

Too bad this video isn't 2019. Michio will know that facts doesn't matter.
Michio is wrong about the other countries keeping their students down. It's not true.
For example the Chinese government encourage their students to travel to America or any Higher Learning institutions.

  98. John Phaser says:

Such a painful truth, in my country child psychologists admit that 90% of special care goes to all kinds of retards and problematic children while the really talented get minimum support.

  99. Nicholas Brown says:

The real secret weapon of science in the US is the US Military. To DOMINATE land air sea space and with that we use A.I. now. Not a visa… but soon thanks to Trump we will be vetting immigrants and only those that can contribute will be allowed here.

  100. Nicholas Brown says:

The real secret weapon of science in the US is the US Military. To DOMINATE land air sea space and with that we use A.I. now along with Quantum Computers Not a student visa program… we are not dependent on foreigners. Thanks to Trump we will be vetting immigrants and only those that can contribute will be allowed here.
China has a human life points system society controlled by a new age nazi dictator named Xi. Stay up too late and get docked points, buy too many video games get docked points kid is late or eats junk food at school you get docked points and those points decide if you can get on not only an airplane but a public transit vehicle from taxi train to in a cab. So the so called geniuses in China will soon all be banned from leaving the sh*thole country that has over a million Muslims in concentration camps aka internment camps just for being Muslim. Now their economy will collapse from Xi thinking hes god and Trump destroying the loser. Ps it's not a trade war because China's economy is dwarfed by the US economy and the worlds banking system runs on the US Dollar just like the worlds airport air controllers all speak English. Soon the raping of America from outside influences will end and the dems that are pushing economic collapse because they are corrupt and Trump is weeks away from exposing them for treason and corruption after we have the record number of federal judges all in place, wait Trump did that already;) #EnjoyTheShow Trump draining the swamp was his biggest campaign promise and so far he's kept more promises than he's made which is a first. Dems control and get the union dues from the teachers unions right now and that is why our education system has been soo fked up. That will soon end. They have been pushing GLOBALISM and a one world government and global elites are on video including Obama saying just that. They tried to dumb down our children and radicalize our college students and that is also ending now. Thanks to the greatest leader in world history President Donald John Trump. Look up #TrumpProphesy. He was Inaugurated at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 7 days old. He set into motion the Third Tmple in Jerusalem by giving Israel its promise that was made decades ago until now but never kept by every President since until Trump followed through. Trump is the New age King Cyrus and New age Moses and the US is protected by God as it is the New Age BABYLON. Thise that try and go to war with us will see fire and fury like the world has never seen before. I hope China is watching Iran and learns along with Russia and North Korea that just like Syria, Trump is a man of his word and has never gone against that fact… oh and dropping a M.O.A.B. on terrorists, the worlds biggest non nuclear bomb. We are not fkng around in the US with domestic bullsh*t now and we definitely WILL NOT permit getting f*cked with from a foreign Country. #AMERICAFIRST also means AMERICAN EDUCATION – SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FIRST as it is a NATIONAL SECURITY MATTER right now and will not be sh*t on again. This is why we elected Trump. This is truely #MAGACOUNTRY ans #WWG1WGA Where We Go One We Go All is not a joke. #TheCalmBeforeTheStorm that Trump warned about with the most powerful US leaders in our Military and Intelligence in the Oval Office of the White House was not a joke, it was a literal statement and warning. This is why democrats and their mainstream media PUPPET FAKE NEWS PROPAGANDA pushing losers are pushing for an economic collapse because they think it will destroy Trump and his chances of winning 2020. Why else would they push a collective collapse of every Americans economy and way of life…. ? People think it's a joke because the media and celebs brainwash their viewers with propaganda that Obama legalized after using propaganda on US soil against Americans was banned decades ago by Congress… fact check that. Wake up before we REPUBLICANS show the domoncraps what a new age Civil war looks like. It only takes 25% of Republican gun owners to take over DC and take back our government which is legal to do if the tyrannical dems keep up their bullsh*t agenda and lies. Not joking- hell we gained our independence by going to war over taxes – taxation without representation…. ps the dems created the kkk and wanted slavery and the Republican Party is still as it was created as, the anti slavery party. Lincoln wanted to free the slaves and end slavery the dems openly called for citizens to gut him alive… well soon after he was shot from behind and assassinated by a brainwashed dem… brainwashed just like the bernie sanders zombie campaign worker that almost killed a number of Republican senators during a softball practice session and the mass shooter recently that loved and followed the DISGUSTING and disgraceful loser extremist Elizabeth Warren the fake 1/1,160th Cherokee aka Pocahontas. Stop watching fake news as a true NEW AGE is upon us. Again.. fact check me – I DARE YOU TO GET WOKE THE FK UP. And that is why this is #MAGACOUNTRY and #WWG1WGA is a true movement brought forth by an Anonymous group internet board on 8 chan #QANON oh and that's why the fake news says it's propaganda and fake news lol it's the lynchpin of their destruction. Have a wonderful day world. 😉 I should write a book. Seriously.
