Judge Julius Waties Waring Takes on Segregation (feat. Rich Fulcher & Busy Philipps) – Drunk History

HELLO.
TODAY WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT WATIES WARING. WATIES WARING WAS AN
8TH GENERATION CHARLESTON GUY. HE WAS A JUDGE. THIS WAS THIS GUY’S LIFE. I’M IN CHARLESTON. I LOVE IT.
I MAKE MONEY. I HAVE MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE. WE’RE RICH PEOPLE. LOOK AT ALL OUR RICH FRIENDS. BUT HE LIVED IN THIS PLACE
WHERE SEGREGATION WAS THE WAY THAT IT WAS. I MEAN, WE’RE FINE
WITH EACH OTHER BUT BLACK PEOPLE GO OVER THERE,
RIGHT? THAT MAKES SENSE. HE AND HIS WIFE
STARTED PLAYING BRIDGE WITH THIS COUPLE,
THE HOFFMAN’S. ELIZABETH HOFFMAN. SHE WAS FROM DETROIT, SHE WAS INCREDIBLY SMART, AND SHE WAS
THE LIFE OF THE PARTY. HE’S NEVER KNOWN A WOMAN LIKE
THIS BEFORE IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE. AND HE’S LIKE,
WHAT ARE YOU ABOUT? THERE’S THIS THING
THAT STARTS HAPPENING WHERE THEY’RE JUST FLIRTING
BETWEEN BRIDGE HANDS. LIKE, ELIZABETH,
IT’S YOUR HAND. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? OH, WATIES.
YOU’RE SO FUNNY. HE REALIZED HE WAS
IN LOVE WITH ELIZABETH AND HE–HE CONFRONTED HIS WIFE,
AND HE–AND HE WAS LIKE, HEY, REMEMBER ELIZABETH? I’M SLEEPING WITH ELIZABETH. [belch] SORRY, I’M GETTING LIKE,
UH, DRUNK NOW. SO HE MARRIED ELIZABETH
AND THEY WERE OSTRACIZED FROM CHARLESTON SOCIETY. YOU’RE NOT CHARLESTON ANYMORE. YOU’RE A YANKEE. YOU’RE AN ASS[bleep]. NO ONE LIKES YOU. AND ALL THEY HAVE LEFT
IS EACH OTHER. AND SO ELIZABETH STARTS GOING
TO WATIES COURT CASES. SHE STARTS GOING OH [bleep]. MAYBE ALL THESE CASES
WHERE THE WHITE PEOPLE WON, SOME OF THE BLACK PEOPLE
GOT SCREWED OVER, YOU KNOW? AND WATIES WAS LIKE, YEAH,
BUT THAT’S THE WAY IT’S AL– IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. AND THEN SHE WAS LIKE, YEAH, BUT–BUT BLACK PEOPLE
ARE PEOPLE THOUGH. AND HE WAS LIKE, YEAH,
BLACK PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE, BUT LIKE, IN, LIKE,
A DIFFERENT WAY. AND SHE SAID,
THAT’S GROSS. WE’RE GOING TO GET DINNER
WITH SOME BLACK PEOPLE. AND HE SAID, WHITE PEOPLE DON’T
GET DINNER WITH BLACK PEOPLE. AND SHE WAS LIKE,
NO, BUT WE DO. WE’RE THOSE KIND OF
WHITE PEOPLE. AND HE WAS LIKE,
ALL RIGHT. I LOVE YOU,
BUT I’M TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW, IT’S REALLY NOT NORMAL
FOR WHITE DINNER– WHITE PEOPLE TO GET DINNER
WITH BLACK PEOPLE. I FEEL LIKE [bleep]. – YEAH, I KNOW.
– LIKE I WANT TO THROW UP. – IF YOU WANT TO GO THROW UP,
YOU CAN. WE’RE VERY OPEN-MINDED HERE. DO YOU WANT TO JUST GET
SOME FRESH AIR? TAKE A LITTLE WALK? – YEAH, SURE.
– OKAY. JUST A LITTLE BIT
AND THEN WE’LL WALK BACK UP. DOES THAT SOUND GOOD? – SO SHE MADE HER HUSBAND GET
DINNER WITH A BLACK COUPLE AND IT WAS AWKWARD AS HELL. IT’S LIKE,
HEY, WHAT’D YOU DO TODAY? AND THEY WERE LIKE,
I DON’T KNOW. SEVERAL PEOPLE
THREATENED MY LIFE. AND THEY WERE LIKE,
OH THAT’S INTERESTING. BUT THEN ELIZABETH MADE WATIES
KEEP DOING IT. AFTER THE SECOND TIME, THE THIRD
TIME, IT BECAME MORE REGULAR. AND IT WAS LIKE, OH RIGHT. WE’RE ALL PEOPLE, YOU KNOW? HE STARTED TO UNDERSTAND THAT BLACK PEOPLE
WERE INCREDIBLY SUBJUGATED. MAYBE WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS SEGREGATION THING,
YOU KNOW. – THIS IS A REALLY GOOD AREA. – I MOVED HERE BECAUSE
THE LAST PLACE I LIVED, MY FRIEND GOT STABBED
WHILE HE WAS GETTING A HAND JOB. – NO.
– YEAH, THAT HAPPENED. – DID HE [bleep]? – I DON’T KNOW.
I DIDN’T ASK. FIRST THING HE DID WAS
HE INTEGRATED HIS COURTROOM. AND HE WAS LIKE, NO, NO, NO.
EVERYBODY SITS TOGETHER. BLACK PERSON THERE,
WHITE PERSON THERE. THEN BLACK PERSON THERE,
THEN WHITE PERSON THERE. BE FRIENDS. QUIT BEING ASS[bleep]. JUST BE FRIENDS. THEN HE RULED THAT BLACK
TEACHERS HAVE TO BE PAID THE SAME AS WHITE TEACHERS,
WHICH IS, UH CRAZY. THE NEXT REALLY BIG ONE, HE RULED BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOW
ALLOWED TO VOTE IN PRIMARIES. AND THAT JUST, LIKE,
SET CHARLESTON ON FIRE. SOMEONE THREW A BRICK
THROUGH THEIR WINDOW ONE NIGHT. THE KKK BURNED A CROSS
ON THEIR LAWN. IT GOT SO BAD,
THERE WAS A PETITION THAT 21,000 PEOPLE SIGNED
THAT SAID HEY, WARINGS, HERE’S $10,000.
TAKE THIS AND MOVE ANYWHERE. THEY’RE LIKE, NO WE STILL HAVE
WORK TO DO HERE, YOU KNOW. [bleep] YOU. AND THEN
BRIGGS V. ELLIOT HAPPENED. THURGOOD MARSHALL TRYING
TO PROVE BLACK KIDS ARE NOT GETTING THE SAME
EDUCATION AS WHITE KIDS. AND THERE WERE THREE JUDGES. ONE OF THEM WAS WATIES WARING
AND THE OTHER TWO WERE LIKE, YEAH, SEGREGATION IS GREAT, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS
IS AMAZING, SO WHO CARES
IF THEY’RE EQUAL? SO THEY LOST AND SCHOOLS WERE
NOT INTEGRATED IN THE SOUTH. WATIES IS LIKE WELL, I’M NOT
GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. AND HE WRITES
THIS 20-PAGE DISSENT. BASICALLY WHAT HE SAID WAS,
EVERYONE IN CHARLESTON IS AN ASS[bleep]. YOU CANNOT BE OKAY
WITH THE FACT THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE SEPARATE
FROM WHITE PEOPLE. THIS IS A NICE TOWN. I GREW UP HERE MY ENTIRE LIFE. WHY DO WE PUNISH
HALF OUR CITIZENS? STOP PUNISHING THEM. JUST BE NICE. #BENICE, YOU KNOW? AND THAT WAS IT. AND THEY MOVED TO NEW YORK. MAN, CAN I JUST TELL YOU GUYS
HOW HAPPY I AM TO NOT BE AS THROW-UPPY
AS I WAS, LIKE, 45 MINUTES AGO? – THAT [bleep] SUCKED SO BAD.
[laughs] IT WASN’T UNTIL 1954– HE SERIOUSLY CHANGED
ALL OF HISTORY. WHEN THE SUPREME COURT
MADE THEIR DECISION IN A CASE CALLED
BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION. THEY WERE LIKE, DUDE,
BECAUSE ONE LONELY JUDGE IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA,
SAYS THAT BLACK KIDS ARE NOT GETTING THE SAME
EDUCATION AS WHITE KIDS. AND HE’S PROVING IT. THE ENTIRE COUNTRY
SHOULD BE INTEGRATED. THEY BASED THEIR ENTIRE DECISION
ON THE FACT THAT WATIES SAID
SEGREGATION SUCKS. THAT DUDE ATE IT FOR YEARS BECAUSE HE BELIEVED THAT BLACK PEOPLE WERE
THE SAME AS WHITE PEOPLE, AND THAT HE WAS
IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE. AND I THINK
THAT’S REALLY INCREDIBLE. – YOU SEEM A MILLION TIMES
BETTER THAN YOU DID. – YEAH, WELL I THREW UP
IN THE [bleep] TOILET. SO THAT MAKES SENSE. [laughter] – I LITERALLY JUST DROOLED
ON THE FLOOR.

  11. Sheri Hone says:

it was an idea that everyone had, that black and white races shouldn't mingle, the kind of idea that was based on what society had deemed correct because of some science crap and social opinion type bull shit, but they believed it, black and white people believed it, and they were wrong. I don't think they were trying to be mean or bad, they just believed it was the best way to live. It took people who could see outside the box to change that. It takes years to change social opinion. the take away: what does society teach us and how does it affect ALL of us and how can we not be tied down by it. … wait… are we not suppose to think to much on this.. i mean, this is drunk history? 😀

  12. Lily Scior-Lewis says:

What's rarely talked about is the fact that, historically, when Whites get pissed and defend Blacks they end up being ostracized, demonized, and treated like shit. There are White people who have given their entire lives just to move one piece on the chess board and never even lived to see it move. I just want to say…

Those MFs are definitely invited to the cookout.

  35. Esther Udo says:

Wow wish I could have shaken their hands and told them that they did well to stand up and try to fix a broken system!

  36. ladynanshi says:

Are we going to ignore Mendez v Westminster (1947)? This case was used as precedence for the Brown v School board case that ended segregation because a Mexican family thought it was unfair their children were attending run down schools. Im sure they used this judge's dissent (kudos for him standing up for what is right) as well but you can't end this segment only giving him the credit.

  37. Sara Anders says:

UMMM also there were these black psychologists who made a psychological arguement that segregation basically created bias and racism in both races but you know I get it it was 1954 white mans words held higher.

  38. Funk Yuns says:

i agree but not with the method.you cant force things on people and expect them to be ok with it afterwards.we still have tension here in the south with the way it was handled.

  42. Maria R. says:

Why does the host look like he wants to do all his guest???

  43. ResessPiecess says:

if anything this should be about Elizabeth Hoffman. She basically was the sole reason cuz if she didn't persist about it to Waties none of it would've happened. i love women.

  44. Ms. Z says:

You know although almost everyone in the comment section says he was great he did this he did that he he he , but I think the true hero in this story is his wife, he did great and I'm not trying to undermine his work but non of that would've happened if his wife didn't change his mind

Note to self: " The status quo can be changed, only so long there are white people willing to let it happen ".

  52. Enrique Aguilar says:

Its sad i learned more from a drunk peron than my history teacher.

  53. x omega says:

Unfortunately nowadays one thing I noticed is black people discriminate against white and white discriminate against black I mean we're getting more evenin terms of people in skin color goes just not better we all still discriminate like

  54. Betsy S says:

Is it just me and perhaps bad assumptions or isn't moving to an obviously 'gated community" the same as moving to a segregated community? 'Gated' is even in the word segregated. Kinda ironic isn't it? I'm not saying that black people cannot or do not also sometimes live in these gated communities but my guess is they're mostly white. Probably wasn't a good idea to include that lil fun-fact about the guest host. It flies in the face of the topic I think.

  55. vilerabbit says:

Honestly, as drunk as this man was, this was a beautiful story that I had no idea about. Thank you Drunk History, now it is time for me to go get drunk and read some history.

  64. Bluemilk92 says:

Okay, I want everyone who responds, to treat me like a toddler. Talk to me like I'm a naive, brainless idiot.
This is straight up white savior fallacy, right? Slavery was a thing, and we know societal pressure, and cultural brainwashing, work on both sides of the fence. Greek scholars were shocked by how easily people (who were obviously not black, but other Greeks) accepted slavery, as long as it was just (paraphrased) the way things are.
So it's speaks for the empathetic ability of this woman, to acknowledge this issue. It also speaks for the pro-activity of this man, to risk his position of power, in an attempt to remedy these flaws he was made aware of.
Regardless, it shouldn't take a prodigal "Good Samaritan" to recognize segregation. The impact he had on changing things, were largely due to the fact that he was a white law-man, who wanted to improve the world. There were countless African-Americans who sacrificed more, and tried harder, but ultimately made less impact, because they simply weren't in the right place (or right skin.)
I'm not saying we should discount this episode, or the actions of this obviously proactive man, who wanted to better the world. I just wanted to point out that a lot of the impact of his actions, was because he was white. At least, from my narrow perspective. I'm just pointing it out, commenting on how bad/good/wrong/right/lucky/absurd it all was, is beyond the scope of this comment.

It's kind of eff'd that the supreme court was hugely influenced by the observations of one white dude. I'm sure they had other equally persuasive arguments, but according to this one very drunk guy on a comedy channel, they focused on this white dude.

  71. Selina Isis says:

Hold up! You just totally white washed Brown v Board of education. It was not based solely on the dissent of one lonely white judge, but the hard work and sacrifice of Thurgood Marshall as well as the families who took that case all the way to the Supreme Court despite death threats, home foreclosures, etc.

Ok, cool but to keep things straight: the Supreme Court didn’t just decide to outlaw segregation because one white judge said they should. The NAACP and similar organizations made coordinated efforts over decades to achieve this. This guy was cool and all but black people also fought for their own rights
