How much do cover crops cost?

What we did here was a lot of variety, and
not an awful lot of seed. It’s expensive, but not as expensive as working
ground. And we needed to know what would work here. And work best for us. And we’ve kinda got the idea of what we’re
gonna try to do. If we just left it alone, I think we’d be
about 90-some percent orchard grass, or more. We got some fescue to grow. Not a whole lot more rye grass than we had
before, but we’ve got some. But this Mediterranean orchard grass is…it
crowds everything pretty hard. And it’s a good plant and it works well with
mycorrhizzal fungi, so…If we got something that killed all the orchard grass, we’d be
in trouble again. But we haven’t ever seen it, so. It’s out there, it’s possible. The cover crops didn’t allow us to avoid the
urea cost. And the cover crops didn’t allow us to avoid
the ground work costs, but that’s a whole lot less costs than those other costs add
up to. So there’s a little bit more wiggle room there. And it was limited how much…sheep ranching
the way we’ve been doing it, there’s a limit to how much ground work you can do. How much you can actually afford. Now, if you want to do the entire place with
a cover crop every fall, what’s to stop you? It’s the cost of seed and a Honda and somebody
to do it. Now those are not…there not… Compared to ground work, they’re cheap.
